I used to watch Bob Ross as a kid. I had a crappy tv in my room with no cable so all I had was GPTV and The Joy of Painting was my favorite show. I loved how soothing and friendly his persona was as he flew through a single painting in 30 minutes. He was like a friend and a teacher on TV before twitch was ever a thing. Bob died of Lymphoma in the 90s. RIP Bob.
The ice cream truck was a big deal when I was a kid. I remember hearing it around dusk during summer vacation with its creepy happy classical music box tunes. I have euphoric memories of superstars and bomb pops with fireflies floating on warm summer breezes and frozen happy sun burnt faces as night approached in slow motion.
This is a Yes Man Jr. He is one of the first bad guys encountered by Nes in EarthBound. EarthBound is an amazing action RPG and it is one of the first console games I can remember with great art that was made to fit the crude sprite limitations of early consoles. Because of this concerted effort to make sassy stylized hand drawn art – it hasn’t aged at all since it was released. Now modern games are swimming with this kind of art but at the time it stood out.
This is an asian guy with a giant pompadour. He is also wearing a leather motorcycle jacket. He has an ironic greaser 50s look.
I like Kid Cudi. His “Man on the Moon” is one of the best rap albums of the 2000s despite getting no love from critics. He has a downbeat depressed persona that comes through in all of his raps. Instead of bragging about money and selling drugs and abusing women he raps about reality and how he deals with day to day life.
I like that one of the most important and blisteringly creative figures in hiphop is an old crusty white dude who nobody has ever heard of. He has made classic records for Kanye, Travis Scott, Tupac, Scarface, the Geto Boys, Kid Cudi and Frank Ocean. Most people grew up listening to Britney or Michael Jackson. I grew up listening to the Geto Boys.
I love Buddha. He was like the original self help guru. He didn’t call on magical deities for happiness – or preach that you had to torture yourself to attain enlightenment – he understood that life is suffering and the key to happiness is to let go of the material things that lead to suffering. This is a statue of fat happy laughing Buddha with birds pooping on him.
I love 90s rap. I remember great records by Ice Cube, De La Soul, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Tribe. I feel like Hip Hop hasn’t progressed much since its golden era in the 90s. It was smart, well produced and made with great skill. Rap is best when it is inventive, funny, thoughtful and peaceful.
This is a caricature of Deadmau5. He is an EDM maker from Canada.
This is an illustration of Chris Chan. He is the king of the internet. He became world famous when he had a run in with 4chan a few years ago. He has his own web comic called Sonichu. Hollywood should put him in movies – his life and creations are better than any fiction. He should be selling his outsider art for lots of money.
This is the Family Crest for the McRae Clan. It means Fortitude. The funny part is I have absolutely none.
This is a caricature of Lady Gaga from her record the Fame Monster.
