I love mockingbirds. I remember snoozing on a summer afternoon after a thunderstorm and feeling depressed and sleepy and actually hearing a mockingbird for the first time. He was copying a long list of noises he had heard in the environment around him – from tree frogs to crickets and car alarms. I remember looking out the window at him and seeing his intelligent yellow eye looking back at me. It is amazing that they evolved to be aware of their environment to survive and their song is proof that they have wheels spinning in their head as they listen to and appropriate the sounds around them.
