Jaco Pastorius was a jazz bass player from Florida who changed the way people play the bass. He played a fret-less electric bass in the same lyrical way that Ornette Coleman played the clarinet. He played it like a soloist plays a sax. He would learn entire Beatles and Coltrane albums and play all the parts on bass. He played for Weather Report and Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell. He had bipolar disorder and it made it impossible for him to keep a job. Eventually he died homeless in Florida at only 35 after getting in a fight with a bouncer at a club. This video has Jaco talking about his music.
