One of my favorite games of all time is Super Metroid. It is one of the best 2d platformers ever made. It is proof that perfect gameplay and imaginative level design never age. I have probably played all the way through it more that 15 times. I love the fact that you can download snes emulators that perfectly replicate the snes and its games and it takes virtually no space on your hard drive. With a cheap usb gamepad from amazon you have the best console ever made -right on your laptop and for free. It is almost like windows exists only to let me make paintings and play snes and n64. Thanks for making this possible smart people.
Sonic was one of my favorite 2-d platformers. I remember when the Sega Genesis was Hi-tech and consoles were judged on how many colors they could display. Two dimensional platformers from that era were very hard. You needed a streak of masochism to complete them — as you died thousands of times getting good enough to complete each stage. Sonic in S&M. The safe word is chaos.
Pewdiepie is a funny and entertaining guy. He is the king of vidyagaem streaming. I think he like invented the industry of talking over games. I saw this tutorial on his twitter and decided to do one just like it. It shows you how to draw a Chibi Pewdiepie.
Parappa was one of my favorite playstation games. It is the grandfather of rhythm based games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. He is a cute puppy rapper who wears a frog beanie and spits fire over cool retro 90s beats.
I love Mario 3 for the NES. This is a Mario Tanooki suit illustration for the portfolio. It is amazing how well games with perfect game play hold up. By today’s standards it is very hard — but it is still fun to play. This is Mario on E running in a tanooki suit with a rainbow behind him.
Banjo Kazooie is one of my favorite games ever. It is such a great platformer from an era loaded with great games. It is really old but its solid game-play and creative mechanics never age. The first time I figured out how to talon trot — where kazooie comes out of banjos backpack and gives Banjo a playful turbo piggyback ride with comical cluck sound fx — I was thoroughly hooked. Every kid should play this.
I love SGDQ. For about 4 years of my life I watched Twitch every day — all day. And when Summer rolled around I would stay glued to my computer for every speed run scheduled. Watching streamers is a replacement for having friends. Most of the people who go to and watch SQDQ are either kids or hapless nerds who never grew up. I identify with these people. I missed a gear somewhere. I am not sure why. But it doesn’t bother me. Master swords and Kirby hats are things I will probably never outgrow.
When Pacman chomps a power pellet he transforms from a meek beta who is afraid of his own shadow to an ornery adrenaline fueled alpha monster who isn’t afraid of anything. Pacman chasing a scared blue ghost.
I love Super Mario 64. It is pretty old but it’s perfect gameplay and well thought out levels never age. Thinking back on playing it for the first time ranks up there with my fondest childhood memories. King Bob-omb is the first boss — I remember being floored climbing up his mountain for the first time and looking out at the entire level. That sense of deep 3d space, adventure, bright colors and imaginative creatures are etched in my brain. I don’t play it much any more but I still enjoy watching mario 64 speedrunners obliterate it nightly. It is nothing short of amaziing the dexterity and patience required to do what they do. Check out spaceman on twitch. He is a nice guy who is good at talking and great at sm64. Edit:Fixed his nose — made it more kingly.
Halloween ghosts are spooky. When they send their friends a letter, they sometimes trip over a bookshelf and into another dimension. You should get Mario Maker. It is one of the coolest Mario games ever.
